iObserver Apple Pulls Anti-Gay App from App Store

Apple has pulled an app from the App Store that espoused an anti-gay and anti-abortion agenda called Manhattan Declaration from a group with the same name. The app had been approved and given a 4+ age rating, a rating that means the app contains “no objectionable material,” but Apple pulled the app over the Thanksgiving weekend after PinkNews got more than seven thousand signatures asking for the app to be pulled.

According to reports, the app presented The Manhattan Declaration, a manifesto put together by conservative Catholic and fundamentalist Christian groups against both abortion rights and gay marriage, in full. The app also included a four questions presented as a survey asking about the user’s opinions on the two subjects, but anyone filling out the survey was then given a score based on whether their answers matched the group’s agenda. In addition, the app also asked people to sign on to the declaration.

Surprisingly, Apple actually commented on this app removal, telling PC Magazine in a statement, “We removed the Manhattan Declaration app from the App Store because it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people.”

For its part, The Manhattan Declaration is “deeply perplexed” as to how Apple could find its app objectionable. In a blog post, it said that, “We are urging Apple to restore the App, and have written to Steve Jobs. We will update you with developments as they arise.”

The Manhattan Declaration Protests Apple’s App Decision

Apple hasn’t often been publicly active in the political spectrum, but in 2008 the company did give US$100,000 to fight the now infamous Prop 8 measure in California that rewrote the state’s constitution to outlaw gay marriage. At that time, Apple said in a statement:

Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

All of this serves to illustrate the tightrope that Apple will constantly have to walk after setting itself up as the arbiter for what can and can not be offered on the App Store. In this case, anti-gay and anti-choice people will be angry the app was pulled, while gay rights and pro-choice users were angry the app was ever approved.

Hymen Reconstruction Surgery: The Price of Virginity?

While there are no actual statistics detailing how often hymen reconstructive surgery is performed in China, it is known that sexually active Chinese women are opting more and more for this type of procedure in response to conservative pressure from new husbands.

Hymen reconstruction surgery is not particular to China. In Muslin countries, where societal pressure for virgin brides is at a premium, the practice is also very popular.

It might surprise some readers to know that this surgery is also available in the United States and that The Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery charges $5,900 for the procedure!

Although it is the women who are seeking the surgery, they are doing so because they feel driven by conservative new mates to do so.

“I really care about virginity. If you go to buy a cell phone, of course you’d want to buy a new cell phone. Who would spend the same amount of money to buy an old cell phone that’s been used for two years?” asks Xia Yang, product manager for a technology company.

Has Mr. Yang considered that a woman is not a cell phone? Perhaps not, but the point is that his chauvinistic and unreasonable comment is indicative of a trend in China, and he is not alone where he stands (even though he should be).

In China, the cost of the surgery is about $737 US and the surgery takes about 30 minutes.

Some Chinese women seek a cheaper way to achieve sort of the same results. “A cheaper, faster path to ‘revirgination’ is available in most sex novelty shops: a Chinese-made artificial hymen that purports to create a physical sensation for the man and emit fake blood when ruptured,” claims the Washington Post.

Hymens can separate for other reasons. Strenuous activities, sports, inserting a tampon and a host of other things that have nothing to do with sexual activity can rupture the delicate mucous membrane.

One question remains:

'Heroes' is getting desperate for Viewers

Hayden Panettiere going gay on 'Heroes'

Several overseas media outlets are reporting that Hayden Panettiere's character Claire Bennett (the Cheerleader) on NBC's Heroes will go gay next season.

A source told the UK's Daily Star that Claire will share a same-sex kiss with her college roommate. “It’s just girly fun at first. But it might progress into a more serious relationship. It depends on how viewers respond."

The 19 year-old actress dated her Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia (Peter) in real life for several months, but the two allegedly had a nasty break-up that made working together on set difficult.

The show could certainly use some help after two lackluster seasons and plummeting ratings. If you want to see a hot lesbian relationship on network TV, make sure to tune in to Heroes and send the producers your messages of support!

Movie Cliches

This site lists tons of movie cliches. Most of them are obvious like: "In all high school or college classrooms, the teacher or professor will always be interrupted in mid-sentence by the end-of-class bell". But some cliches I never knew were even cliches, such as "Two total strangers, upon falling into bed together, will always reach an incredibly intense, mutual, and SIMULTANEOUS orgasm on the first try". I thought that was just normal sex. Oh well, I guess I'm lucky that's how my sex life is. :) Anyway, it makes an interesting read.

New Game or Sex? Poll shows New Game

A new poll done by British online store PS3PriceCompare polled several of their customers (1130 to be exact) and asked them a simple question.

Question 1: "Which would you prefer; sex with your partner or an evening playing video games?"

32% of the guys (all of them men in relationships) said they would rather play games. Kind of shocking to me, but I also have a "lady in the streets, freak in the sheets" kind of gal. Well... at least the last part is true. Anyway, things get really interesting on the second question.

Question 2: "Which would you prefer; sex with your partner or an evening playing a new video game?"

72% of the guys said they would prefer to play the new videogame.

Remember, this is not hardcore statistics. We are not talking about a ultra-controlled study done by sex researchers. This was just a random poll held by an online store. But it is interesting to see so many guys pick sex over videogames.
